Finds, Facts and Fun from The Travel Blogosphere

We can’t help it. Sometimes we just have to go on a treasure hunt among our fellow bloggers posts for good deals, special offers, and other interesting tidbits that we can turn around and share with Travel For Boomers readers. We’re careful to give credit where it’s due. So — let’s see what some other travel bloggers are putting out there…

Chase Sapphire Preferred: 50,000 or 40,000 points?

Gary Leff of View From The Wing reports that the best sign-up bonus for a credit card application has been the 50,000 point offer from Chase Sapphire Preferred, although the standard offer you get from the Chase Sapphire Preferred website has been reduced to 40,000.

One way to get the 50,000 point offer is by using links on his blog, as well as the link on the Frugal Travel Guy’s blog, rather than the website. However, Mommy Points notes that the offer for 50,000 Ultimate Reward points after spending $3000 on the card in the first three months is still available at this link.

Note: Back in January, Gary noted that the Chase offer is also “among the most valuable. Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer one-to-one into United/Continental and Hyatt (as the most valuable transfer options) and also to Southwest, Korean Airlines, British Airways, Marriott, Priority Club, and Amtrak. You can transfer to whomever’s account you wish. And with most of their partners, the points transfer instantly.”

And Rick Ingersoll, The Frugal Travel Guy, strongly suggests that “it is in your best interest to make a screenshot of the offer and print one as well.” Good advice. You can never be too careful when you’re going for a big offer like this one.

Delta Platinum 35,000 frequent flier mile bonus

The Frugal Travel Guy has also reported that there’s “a new 35,000 mile bonus for the Delta Platinum card for both consumer and business! 10,000 of those 35,000 are MQMs as well. However, the $175 fee is not waived for the first year.”

Virgin America Elevate Points

The One Mile At A Time blog recently reported that Virgin America Elevate points can be redeemed for travel on Virgin Atlantic. And as of March 22, Elevate points can be redeemed for travel on Virgin Australia. The blog also shared the link for calculating the redemption.

Favorite Gadgets for Long Trips

Recently our own Christine Krzyszton offered a post on how to survive, and thrive, on long plane trips. This week, Brian Kelly, the author of The Points Guy blog listed his 10 favorite travel gizmos that, for him, make long-haul trips more bearable. You can read his entire post here, but in a nutshell, here’s his list:

  1. Bose QC14 Acoustic Noise-Cancelling Headphones – for all those annoying noises that can keep you from sleeping.
  2. Eye Mask
  3. Sleep Aid (His favorite is Lunesta, but Lunesta and Ambien can result in sleep walking, which might be embarrassing on a long plane trip!)
  4. Loafers
  5. iPad
  6. Big bottle of water
  7. Pajamas (Seriously? Yep. He changes into pajamas!)
  8. Hand sanitizer
  9. Moisturizer
  10. Toothbrush

Google Currents

Finally, one of our favorite Baby Boom travel blogs — Donna Hull’s “My Itchy Travel Feet” — suggests a way to keep up with all your favorite blogs on your iPhone, iPad, Android or Tablet: Google Currents. “This free app displays content in an easy-to-read magazine style. And, so far, it is the only content aggregation app designed for all devices,” she writes. (Flipboard doesn’t work with Android).
